Scare Up Those Halloween Treats!

What do bat’s wings, baked worms and bleeding popcorn all have in common? Yes, you got it—it’s Halloween time again. This is when we not only get to enjoy a change of season along the East Coast, but also get to try new fall recipes with pumpkins, squash, sweet potatoes and freshly picked apples. But I digress. Plus, most kids find barbecued bat’s wings, swamp dip and spider web dip much more intriguing. Best of all, did you know that these are all recipes that are right here in our CDKitchen file?
Oh yes—if you’re like me and need some garish, ghoulish recipe ideas to scare up some treats for your kids this Halloween, look no further. The busy cooks and readers here at CDKitchen have been creatively cooking up some deliciously deranged goodies to make the most of this haunting time of the year.
And just check out at these titles—they sure do help to make the most of this seasonal time:
• Amputated Finger Pizza
For kids who like pizza but want to get ghoulish, here’s the answer—but if the amputated finger part turns their stomach (like my daughter)—eliminate that part of the title and just go for pizza. It’s a tried-and-true hit with most kids!
• Baked Monster Eyes
• Baked Worms
Who ever thought your oven would be privy to such monstrosities? Yes, if you have a kid who thrives on scary, gross creations—you just might meet with success if you suggest trying a few of these recipes for that upcoming Halloween party.
• Barbecued Bat Wings
• Bat Eyes Recipe
Is it all in a name? While professional recipe developers know that the name is an important final touch on a successful recipe, it’s obvious that our readers have figured that out too. Just reading through this list gave my daughter and I the shivers and shakes!
• Bat Wings with Swamp Dip Recipe
• Bleeding Popcorn Recipe
• Zombie Meatloaf Recipe
For those who would like to have a party but don't go for quite such garishly gory foods, there are also some tamer recipes—or if you have kids that don’t like strangely colored foods or need to stay away from food coloring, feel free to adapt these to your needs:
• Halloween Hummus Recipe
• Spider Web Dip Recipe
• Coffin Dip Recipe
• Haunted Forest Platter
• Spooky Spread Recipe
• Witch’s Cauldron Dip Recipe
And there are even more in our database—if you’re looking for something tasty yet scary, there’s nothing like searching through a selection from Halloween-minded folks. And please remember, if you try to create something new this year—feel free to share it. I’d love to hear about what your kids liked best—or what new culinary creation they whipped up, scary or not.
And don’t forget to try some dry ice to add some special effects to your evening—it adds the perfect touch to a trick-or-treat night!
